A devastating fire at a homeless encampment in Los Santos has claimed the life of one unhoused individual, raising urgent concerns about the safety and conditions faced by vulnerable populations in the city.
The fire broke out early Tuesday morning at a makeshift encampment located under Interstate 4 along Elgin Ave. in the Strawberry neighborhood of Los Santos.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames, plumes of black smoke, and hearing cries for help.
“You could hear people screaming, ‘Im burning!’, ‘Where's Jimmy?’ – It was like something out of a movie, but it was happening right in front of me,” said eyewitness Don Thompson
An LSPD officer on routine patrol noticed the black smoke from a few blocks away and quickly located the blaze, calling for assistance from San Andreas Fire and EMS.
Fire crews arrived shortly after and battled the flames while searching for those trapped in the encampment. Despite their efforts, authorities confirmed that one individual lost their life in the blaze. Several others were treated and transported for minor injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation.
A spokesperson for the LSPD said, “This is tragic, but thankfully our officer was nearby and was able to call for help, saving the lives of others in the encampment.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire officials emphasize the importance of safety precautions in encampments, particularly during the dry season.
The community has rallied to support those affected by the fire, with local organizations collecting donations of clothing, food, and hygiene supplies.
“The City of Los Santos remains committed to improving conditions for its homeless population in the wake of this tragic event,” a Spokesperson for the City of Los Santos told Weazel News
As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information about the fire or those impacted to come forward.
