A tragic car accident on Calais Ave. in Little Seoul has left the community in shock after a head-on collision between a police vehicle and a civilian car resulted in the death of the civilian driver.
The collision occurred late Monday in the 2100 block of Calais Ave. near Vespucci Blvd.
According to a witness, the officer was traveling southbound on Calais Ave., slowing down as they approached a red light at the intersection, when the civilian driver in an Elegy R8 turned onto Calais Avenue at a high rate of speed, crashing into the officer.
“Dude flew into the cop car and nearly flew out of the car. You know the part where the convertible top secures into the car? His neck hit that and snapped! Dude was not wearing his seatbelt for real,” said Drew Lopez.
Crews from the San Andreas Fire and EMS promptly responded to the scene to treat the civilian for injuries and evaluate the officer. The civilian was pronounced dead, and the officer was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene.
The LSPD says the incident is a tragic accident and is under investigation.
